When classical commentators (Mufassirun) like Ibn Kathir or Imam Al-Qurtubi discussed "rivals to Allah," they often referred to the physical idols of Mecca. In the contemporary context, however, idols are rarely made of stone. Instead, they are psychological and cultural constructs.

Islam does not teach the eradication of love. It teaches the purification and prioritization of love. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) famously stated three signs of faith: "Whoever loves Allah and His Messenger more than anything else, loves others only for the sake of Allah, and hates to return to disbelief as he hates to be thrown into fire." When a person elevates any creation—whether wealth, status, desires, a leader, a spouse, or children—to a level where they fear its loss, obey its demands above Allah's commands, or seek ultimate fulfillment from it, they have created an "equal" ( Andad ) to God. The verse warns that loving anything with the same intensity, reverence, and unconditional submission due only to the Creator compromises a person's spiritual foundation. When a person loves a created thing as they should love Allah, they experience spiritual instability. Created things are inherently flawed, temporary, and prone to breaking. Loving them unconditionally leads to inevitable heartbreak. Why the Believer’s Love is "Ashaddu" (Stronger)

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him." (Bukhari). One who loves Allah more than anything does not fear death as an end, but as a bridge to the Beloved. They prepare for that meeting with good deeds, not with dread.
