Skank's story began in 1991 when Samuel Rosa (guitar, vocals) and Henrique Portugal (keyboards) united with bassist Lelo Zaneti and drummer Haroldo Ferretti. The band's name was inspired by Bob Marley's "Easy Skanking," a nod to the dancehall and reggae rhythms that would heavily influence their early work. Their first independent album, a self-titled release in 1992, was a modest production that quickly caught the attention of Sony Music. After signing with the label's newly created Chaos imprint, the album was re-released in April 1993, propelling the band to national fame.
The band’s middle period saw them embracing experimental textures, Britpop influences, and the legacy of Minas Gerais' Clube da Esquina .
